Who can start the course?
You can start the PADI Freediver course if you are at least 15 years old. You need adequate swimming skills. And of course, you need to be in good physical health. No prior experience with snorkeling, skin diving or freediving is required. We use a low volume mask, freediving fins, and a weight belt. The training starts in our shop in Playa del Cocos. We complete the course in the beautiful local dive sites. Several packages are available to make this experience worthwhile. After certification, you can book excursions to do more freedives (apnea) under supervision. or just with a buddy.
Free diving relies on divers’ ability to hold their breath until resurfacing rather than on the use of a regulator used as part of scuba gear. It’s considered by some to be closer to nature.
The PADI Freediver course consists of three main phases:
- Knowledge development about free diving principles. This happens through independent study. (We use the PADI Freediver Touch). This is followed by a classroom session. We organize these in our fully air conditioned classroom.
- A confined water session to learn breath-hold techniques. At the same time, we teach you static and dynamic apnea. The goal is apnea of 90 seconds and dynamic apnea of 25 metres/80 feet.
- Open water sessions to practice free immersion and constant weight freedives. We of course also teach you proper buddy procedures. We’re aiming for a constant weight freedive of 10 metres/30 feet.
