Scuba divers have been called the eyes, ears and voices of the ocean. Following training, you will be able to contribute to the knowledge and conservation of the marine environment by monitoring changing populations.
At Rich Coast Diving we commit to sustainable diving practices and integrate marine conservation awareness in our daily activities. That’s why we are proud to be the first PADI Eco Dive center and Green Fins certified dive center in Costa Rica !
As a PADI CDC center we train new PADI Dive Professionals to be defenders of the environment where they are working and to share this commitment to our guests and students.
We are located in Playas del Coco, Province of Guanacaste, one of the best areas for scuba diving in Costa Rica, with a rich marine biodiversity and very accessible diving areas. Our program focusses in monitoring the health of the fish population in the area and it’s crucial for the management and conservation of our local marine habitats.

Program Information
Rich Coast Diving offers 5 different Marine Conservation Programs related to fish monitoring. The programs are of different lengths and you can start any given day. You can even combine the Ocean Conservation Program with our Divemaster Program. That way you will become an ECO-Divemaster.

How will I spend my days ?
The goal of our programs is to train you to collect scientific valid data that is used to strengthen (local) conservation efforts. Therefor you will be diving a lot, if not every day ! To make sure that the data you collect is of high quality. We start with fish identification quizzes and exams.
Each program also includes presentations on fish biology and ecology, to give you a better understanding of the fish populations in our local environment. And after diving there is of course data entry.

Here in Costa Rica we work together with important conservation partners to strengthen our conservation efforts. Our conservation programs are Internationally recognised and developed by scientist from REEF.
We also work together with the SeaChange Agency with Green Fins and PADI Project AWARE.
About REEF
Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) protects marine life through education, service, and research. REEF facilitates programs that actively engage divers, snorkelers, and other marine enthusiasts in marine conservation. This is primarily accomplished through the Volunteer Fish Survey Project. Since its launch in 1993, this citizen science program has generated one of the largest marine life databases in the world.
In 2020, the database surpassed 250,000 surveys conducted at almost 15,000 sites throughout the world’s oceans by over 16,000 volunteer divers and snorkelers worldwide. With knowledge, training, and the opportunity to get involved, these marine citizen scientists make significant and ongoing contributions. REEF provides varied training opportunities to encourage wide participation, and has a comprehensive experience-rating system and QA/QC checks for data submission to ensure high quality data.
The survey methodology was developed with support from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and guidance by the Southeast Fisheries Science Center of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
The project allows volunteer SCUBA divers and snorkelers to collect and report information on marine fish populations as well as selected invertebrate and algae species in temperate areas. The data are collected using a fun and easy standardized method, and are housed in a publicly-accessible database on REEF's Website. These data are used by a variety of resource agencies and researchers.
