We're thrilled to introduce our latest initiative, the Marine Conservation Program, here at Rich Coast Diving in Costa Rica.
Situated in Playas del Coco, in the Province of Guanacaste, our location is rated as the best for scuba diving in Costa Rica, boasting abundant marine biodiversity and easily accessible diving spots. Scuba divers are sometimes called the eyes, ears, and voices of the ocean. And our newly launched Marine Conservation Program aims to contribute to marine environmental knowledge and conservation through the monitoring of changing fish populations.
Our program offers three distinct options of varying durations, each focusing on different aspects of marine life:
1. Fish Monitoring
2. Pufferfish Monitoring
3. Shark Monitoring
These programs are available for varying durations, and you can commence your involvement on any given day. Additionally, you have the flexibility to combine the Ocean Conservation Program with our Divemaster Program, transforming yourself into an ECO-Divemaster. 2. Marine Conservation Training and Certifications
The objective of our programs is to equip you with the skills to gather scientifically valid data, thereby contributing to the enhancement of local conservation efforts. This involves regular diving, often on a daily basis, to ensure the collection of high-quality data. To maintain the standard of data collection, we initiate the process with fish identification quizzes and exams.
Each program comprises informative presentations on fish biology and ecology, enhancing your understanding of local fish populations. Post-diving activities include data entry sessions. While the program spans a full day, we have incorporated scheduled breaks that allow you to explore the incredible nature and wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer. What Marine Conservation Certification will I receive ?
You will receive certifications for any of the courses you choose and complete. The certifications you will attain by participating in our Marine Conservation Programs include internationally recognized credentials such as REEF Surveyor (Level 1, 2 or 3), PADI Specialty certifications, and Green Fins certifications. Picture starting your day not just leisure diving at the stunning dive sites of Playas del Coco but actively participating in hands-on conservation efforts with our dedicated staff. We start early morning at 7AM. You will prepare for two survey dives. You acquire information about fish species, numbers, their behavior, and collect data crucial for conservation actions. In the afternoon you will enter all the collected data in the international REEF database. The data collected during our conservation programs is validated by REEF.org and entered into their open-source database, contributing to scientific research and policy-making.
We also coordinate ocean and beach cleanups, removing plastic debris that poses a threat to marine creatures. These activities not only directly contribute to the ocean's health but also foster a profound connection to the environment you've grown to love.
Your participation in activities such as fish population monitoring and ocean cleanups directly enhances the broader understanding of marine ecosystems, aiding scientists in making informed decisions for their protection.

4. Our Conservation Partners in Costa Rica
In Costa Rica, we collaborate closely with significant conservation partners to enhance our conservation initiatives. Our conservation programs hold international recognition and are developed by scientists from REEF.
We are proud to work in partnership with the SeaChange Agency, aligning with Green Fins and PADI AWARE.
About REEF
The Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) is dedicated to safeguarding marine life through education, service, and research. REEF actively involves divers, snorkelers, and marine enthusiasts in marine conservation, primarily through the Volunteer Fish Survey Project. Launched in 1993, this citizen science program has created one of the world's most extensive marine life databases.
As of 2020, the database has exceeded 250,000 surveys conducted at nearly 15,000 sites across the world's oceans, thanks to the participation of over 16,000 volunteer divers and snorkelers globally. Equipped with knowledge, training, and opportunities to engage, these marine citizen scientists consistently contribute valuable data. REEF offers diverse training opportunities to encourage broad participation, employing a comprehensive experience-rating system and quality assurance/quality control checks for data submission to ensure the data's high quality.
The survey methodology, developed with support from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and guidance from the Southeast Fisheries Science Center of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), enables volunteer SCUBA divers and snorkelers to collect and report information on marine fish populations, selected invertebrate species, and algae in temperate areas. The data, collected through a standardized and enjoyable method, are housed in a publicly accessible database on REEF's website. Various resource agencies and researchers utilize this data for informed decision-making in marine conservation.

As a PADI 5 Star Career Development Center, we have been effectively facilitating this journey for over 30 years.
